Blackpool Beach: Choosing Between North, Central and South

Blackpool’s South, Central and North beaches are three of its designated bathing-water stretches. Compare them, then check water-quality updates and beach safety advice before you go.

Blackpool beach is not one single stretch: Blackpool South, Blackpool Central and Blackpool North are three of the resort’s designated bathing-water sites. Each is monitored separately, so check the information for your chosen stretch and take local beach-safety advice into account.

  • South: a designated bathing-water stretch in the south-seafront area.
  • Central: a designated bathing-water stretch with its own water-quality monitoring.
  • North: a designated bathing-water stretch with its own water-quality monitoring.
  • Monitoring: the Environment Agency samples designated bathing waters during the bathing season, from May to September.
How Blackpool's beach areas differ

How Blackpool's beach areas differ

Blackpool South, Blackpool Central and Blackpool North are distinct designated bathing-water stretches along the resort’s seafront. For choosing where to swim, compare their bathing-water information: each site is monitored separately, and conditions or classifications can differ.

The Environment Agency takes 20 samples at each designated site each year during the bathing season, which runs from May to September.

A seasonal classification is not a live update, so check the latest water-quality information when planning a swim. For a wider look at the seafront landmarks, the guide to Blackpool's three piers covers the North, Central and South piers.

South Beach

South Beach

Blackpool South is the designated bathing-water stretch in the south-seafront area. Before swimming, check the latest bathing-water information and pay attention to conditions on the day. Blackpool Council warns that incoming tides and sandbanks can cut people off. Read and obey beach warning signs, and respect safety chains during high water or hazardous conditions.

Central Beach and the main attractions

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is about a 14-minute walk from Chadberry House Hotel.

The council advises against swimming within 50 metres of the piers. It also warns that algae can make the promenade, sea wall and steps slippery. Keep to the safety advice around the seafront, and do not treat the beach as a swimming area without checking conditions.

Planning time at the park is easier with the guide to Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides.

North Beach and quieter seafront walks

North Beach and quieter seafront walks

Blackpool North is a designated bathing-water stretch, and its water-quality information should be checked separately from the other sites. Choose based on current conditions and your plans for the seafront.

For swimming, Blackpool Council advises going with others and staying within your depth and capabilities. Ask Beach Patrol if you are unsure.

Do not use dinghies or inflatables in the sea, and avoid swimming in the dark, after drinking alcohol, when unwell or when the water is very cold. Adults should stay with children at all times, including in the sea.

Before you go

Beach conditions and water-quality notices can change. Check the official site before you go: Blackpool Council directs visitors to Admiralty EasyTide for tide times and the Environment Agency for water-quality information.

If someone gets into difficulty in the water, contact Beach Patrol or call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately.
